Perhaps baseball is still more popular in Japan than in America. In 2016, the Kingdom team played two contests of unprecedented exciting matches in the Tokyo Dome. Both matches were sold out with 50,000 enthusiastic spectators and were broadcast live on national television from Japan and in the Netherlands on FOX Sports.
Greatness Coco (Wladimir) Balentien, coming for the Yakult Swallows, we can safely describe as a god of Japanese baseball. In 2013 he broke the Japanese homerun record of 55 that had been in the books since 1964 in the name of Sadaharu Oh. He finished the season with 60 home runs. With this, Coco has gained eternal fame in professional baseball in Japan.
In short, Japanese baseball is strong and lives tremendously. It is therefore great that the country of Nippon, Toyota, Sony and many more beautiful names, is participating in the World Port Tournament Baseball in the Neptunus Family Stadium.

Jan Dirk Stouten is the new tournament director of the World Port Tournament. The 47-year-old Stouten is director and editor-in-chief of Friends in Business and internet channel Recht uit Rotterdam (RUR.nl). Until the summer of 2016, he was active as a sports reporter at RTV Rijnmond for 26 years.’We agreed that I would fulfill a representative role during the event’, says Stouten. ‘I do not interfere with the actual organization of the tournament, but will receive sponsors and other relations and present a number of official moments. When this interpretation turned out to be an option for the board, I wanted to participate because my business focus is on Friends in Business and RUR.
‘Stouten wants to use the upcoming tournament to get to know a lot of people involved and have conversations. ‘We must preserve the strength of the WPT, but also dare to implement reforms for the future. During the tournament in 2019, for example, we will create a festival site with food trucks from the forecourt at the Neptunus Familiestadion. In the future I will not exclude another set-up of the tournament.
‘CEO Dennie van Leeuwen, from VLS, is pleased with the arrival of Stouten. ‘By his work as a presenter and, above all, the passionate way in which he reported on matches from Feyenoord, Jan Dirk is a familiar face in the region. He has been visiting the WPT for years as a sports enthusiast, reporter and the last editions as a sponsor and he knows the tournament well. In view of his business activities we will relieve him as a board, for this role he is very suitable.
